The Nikon D60 Digital Camera, a newer version of the D40, retains most of the features that made Nikon the top selling manufacturer of digital cameras. Chock full of features, the D60 is solidly constructed, ergonomically built and features include a ten megapixel CCD, super-fast startup and shutter speed and a dual dust reduction system. Make no mistake, this camera is no slouch and other than a weak memory card slot, the Nikon D60 is a solid prosumer version of the D40. Whats new in the D60? Several great features are included that make this the next generation of digital SLR.

The Nikon D60 Digital Body features Nikon’s Active D-Lighting mode, which does slow the camera’s speed a bit, but makes up for it in its ability to brighten shadow areas. The resulting images are much improved, however keep in mind that you sacrifice some picture quality in terms of additional noise. Despite this tradeoff, the D60 Active D-Lighting lessens the likelihood that you will end up with a picture that is too dark or blown out. The Nikon D60 also features in-camera image retouching options for on the fly fixes. The photos have accurate exposure, low noise levels, and minimal purple fringing and generally need little editing.

The D60 body isn’t sold without a lens and you have your choice of one or two lenses (18-55mm or 55-200mm), both with vibration reduction. The D60 doesn’t come with a memory card, but supports both SD and SDHC memory. Nikon’s battery life has declined slightly on the D60 when compared to previous models. the Nikon D60 also doesn’t support a battery grip, nor does it come with a video cable. The AC adaptor can be expensive, as can the replacement batteries and video cables; something to keep in mind when looking at prices. As with most Nikon’s, images can be oversaturated and soft and the camera lacks features such as a decent size viewfinder, bracketing, DOF preview, live view, and few focus points.

Despite a few drawbacks, the Nikon D60 Digital Camera is a solid contender in the prosumer market. The digital menu is easy to read and understand and the most commonly used settings are easy to access. It supports USB-2 speed for fast uploading and in-camera editing for small glitches such as red eye. Nikon’s D60 is hardly a disappointment the D60 digital camera is on sale at many online malls including Amazon.com and can be had for a little as $635.99.
